Thread for recording music
I think if you have a decent 57 instrument mic, a condenser mic with a pop filter, and some decent software you can get some good pretty home recordings.

Re: Thread for recording music
I'll be using a boss br-1600 digital recording studio to do the recordings of my current band. Writes directly to CD as well.

Re: Thread for recording music
I think you'd need a little something to capture the low end a bit. A 57 and a condenser are great for picking up all your instrumentation from say 500k - 10,000k (guitar, vox, snare..etc), but you're gonna miss that 80hz warmth when your mixing. Even when doing simple home recording. Look for a used Shure 52a. They're "kick drum mics" but they sound great on bass amps and I've even had success using them for vocals when blended subtlety with a 57 (and a bit of overdrive).
A few years ago I pressed the pause button on my life and sat in a basement for a year and taught myself home recording. If you need and help or pointers, hit me up. I could nerd out on this shit all day.

Re: Thread for recording music
This was a parody thread, but I appreciate all the solid insight.

Truth!! www.artthieves.us ... Recorded by us using gear we had on hand (although we did outsource mixing and mastering).

What was your tracking set up? Curious.

Re: Thread for recording music
I can't really remember much beyond my own shit, because we recorded in many locations with different gear configurations over the course of a 11 months. I know to record my bass parts, we used a 57 on my 2x12 cab, a bass drum mic (pretty sure it was a Shure Beta 52A) on my 1x15 cab, and another 57 in the middle of the room. Ben Kettleson (formerly of The Glow) masterminded the whole thing...he'd be the one to talk to about the process.

Re: Thread for recording music
I commend the using a 57 as a room mic for the bass cab. Even if there was an array of mic choices I think a 57 can have a good effect there. I've also had good success pointing a 57 at the fretboard and mixing it in with the other tracks VERY subtlety.

Re: Thread for recording music
The 57 is my favorite mic that is less than $100.
We've been using an old 57 and a Royer r-101 for vocals on the full length and it's been great. We used that combo to do some bass fixes too and it sounded great.

Re: Thread for recording music
Lately i've been doing all my recording with one of these. Has stereo condenser microphones. It always sounds super. If i just kind of put it near whatever i'm playing, it gets it just fine. it's pretty smart, apparently, which simplifies all the things I have to do with it.
unfortunately a lot of times when I record like 20 tracks of all evan all the time, it just turns into...
