I commend the using a 57 as a room mic for the bass cab. Even if there was an array of mic choices I think a 57 can have a good effect there. I've also had good success pointing a 57 at the fretboard and mixing it in with the other tracks VERY subtlety.

I think you'd need a little something to capture the low end a bit. A 57 and a condenser are great for picking up all your instrumentation from say 500k - 10,000k (guitar, vox, snare..etc), but you're gonna miss that 80hz warmth when your mixing. Even when doing simple home recording. Look for a use...
