When the world first saw the iPhone they were blown away by the hardware. no one had any idea that what really was going to make the iPhone wasn't to come until one year later: the app store. 30 million hands owning iPhones/iPod Touch's and 140,000 app's later people have embraced the technology, because of the OS.
We're forgetting that the revolution isn't in the hardware design, as stated "it's like a big iPod Touch or iPhone", which is exactly the point! Think of the possibilities that developers will have with this software and multi touch. Idea's are now magnified in scope, more so than the hardware being a magnified design of the iPod Touch / iPhone. I'm a power user, I'm in the 5% of computer owners that use a system for serious video editing. Still, I'm intrigued with what this device could offer me, because of the app's to come. Recording a multitrack audio demo in a GarageBand lite app? Awesome. Board games with the family with the device sitting on the coffee table? Extra awesome.
It won't ever replace a desktop or for most, a laptop, it's a bridge between that and your hand mobile device. I'm excited by the possibilities of multi-touch on a 10" display with a 1ghz processor. Lots of extremely mobile applications that will all be done without a keyboard, mouse, or external devices. Very exciting.
It will truly take off 12 months after launch, JUST like the iPhone did.
My bias is I've been successful professionally and creatively with a Mac, not so much on a windows based OS. If there's a negative opinion about this, I'm curious as to where you bias lays. _________________

I am an iPod Touch user with no bias towards Apple or Mac products. I prefer my PC over a Mac computer, but I recognize that Macs are much better with certain software.
In my house I have both PC and Mac laptops.
I guess I only see the iPad being an exciting product for people who commute. In the future if they come out with applications that can flawlessly tie in with home automation technologies or at least house audio/video systems it could be more interesting to someone who doesn't travel a lot.

i cant think of a single thing that a mac can do that a pc cant
i remember taking a multimedia class in college and the teacher was a huge mac nerd and was always sure to explain how what we were doing wasnt possible on windows pc's
and then all of the instructional literature was written for windows xp and before every lab she had to translate the instructions for us into osx

maybe in time my 'tude towards this will change, but I see absolutely no correlation between an iphone and an ipad.
For me, it's the convenience of the iphone that I love. It's small, it provides me with everything I need (email, maps, internet, bejeweled, phone and ipod) and I don't need anything further. I don't play enough "games with the family" and I don't record music (myself), so none of this appeals to me. It's larger (not easily transported, meaning, it can't fit in my pocket) and if it's anything like the iphone, buggy as heck.
I don't know I'm still not convinced. I guess ask me in 2 years when I have one and I'm in love with it...

anywhere from 9 - 18 months after it's actual release and the opinion of it on a global level will be changed, as then it's potential will be fully realized.
...exactly like the iPhone, a lot like the iPod, and the iPod Touch. This is not a niche device like the MacBook Air or the Cube. _________________
