Audible Crayons hails from the Boston area and is
the product of many diverse musical influences
tunneled through one common vision. The band's use of
musical theory has been presented through such styles
as rock, funk, classical, surf and even international
while riding out times such as 4/4,6/8,5/4 and 13/8.
The youth of this band makes the rawness of such
musical approach remain while not seeming too
remedial.
Mike Scrima, 22, founder and oldest member of the
band, received his musical training at the youngest
ages, 9-13 years old, at the Boston Archdiocesan Choir
School in Cambridge and attended one semester of the
music business program at the University of
Massachusetts at Lowell at 19 years old. Shaun Hanson,
22, met Mike in high school and shared common musical
interests which later turned Shaun onto many hours of
self-taught playing (some resulting in mild
tendonitus)and only recently having few lessons here
or there at such music retail chains as Daddy's Junky
Music. Jamie DiCicco, 20, was introduced to Mike
through a mutual friend at their place of work and
coupled his self-taught playing with music theory
classes at the University of Massachusetts at
Dartmouth after joining the band at age 18. Joe
Buckley, 18, met Shaun through their place of work and
joined the band at age 17, after having been in a few
bands prior to this one, and also has only recently
involved himself in formal lessons.
One common teacher that these four bandmates share,
however, is experience. The year 1999 saw these
musicians share 15 performances together, some of
which were nightmarish, equipment-failing disasters
and some of which were encore-provoking crowd-winners.
The settings for these explosive events ranged from
coffeehouses and festivals around the Boston area to
bars far away from home in places like Los Angeles
which is how far their experimentally independent
summer tour took them. Although such accomplishments
as that and their first full-length album, The Works
of Said Crayons, are already under their collective
belt, Audible Crayons is far from being done and far
from considering themselves at their peak just yet.
